3-day itinerary in Chapada dos Veadeiros

The essentials in a long weekend: Vale da Lua, the National Park and the waterfalls around Alto Paraíso.

Three well-spent days are enough to see the heart of the Chapada without rushing. The ideal base is São Jorge — the village at the gateway to the National Park — or Alto Paraíso, 40 minutes away. This itinerary gathers the most iconic, easiest-to-reach sights, grouped by proximity so you drive little and hike a lot.

  1. 1

Day 1Arrival and Vale da Lua

    Base: São Jorge

Arrive via Alto Paraíso and head to São Jorge. Start easy at Vale da Lua — rock formations carved by the São Miguel river — and close the day at Mirante da Janela and the open cerrado of Jardim de Maytrea, one of the region's best sunsets.

  2. 2

    Day 2National Park trails

    Base: São Jorge

A full day inside Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. The Trilha dos Saltos reaches the two giant Rio Preto falls (120 m and 80 m) and the Carioquinhas pools. Get in early — entry has a cut-off time — and bring water and lunch.

  3. 3

    Day 3Alto Paraíso waterfalls

    Base: Alto Paraíso

On the way back, explore the area around Alto Paraíso. Almécegas I and II sit on the same farm — one a tall, imposing drop, the other with a wide swimming pool — and São Bento closes the day with a short, easy, almost fully paved access.

Best time to go

The best window is the dry season, May to October: firm trails, passable dirt roads and sun most days. In the rainy season (November to March) the waterfalls run full and green, but there's a flash-flood risk and some roads and sights may close.
